Jose Rizo-Patron serves as president of Team Wendy, responsible for leading the company’s strategic direction, growth, culture and overall operations. As a member of the Avon Rubber p.l.c. Group Executive team, Jose works directly with Team Wendy’s management team to execute the company’s vision to deliver innovative, protective and best-in-class products to users across military, law enforcement, search and rescue, and adventure markets.
Prior to joining Team Wendy in 2011, Jose held several leadership positions across varied industries with an emphasis on developing and growing business in emerging international markets. Most recently, Jose was the founder and managing director of an international business development and risk management services firm. Jose holds an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and a B.S. in Marketing from Birmingham-Southern College.
Originally from Lima, Peru, Jose has lived in several countries and is a native Spanish speaker. Since arriving in Cleveland in 2011, he has become a huge fan of the city, especially of its Cleveland Indians.
Amy Carpenter is the director of operations for Team Wendy. In this role, she leads the day-to-day operations of our manufacturing facility; this includes daily production of all products, vendor relations, inventory management, plant engineering and quality assurance. Amy joined Team Wendy in 2005 as quality manager, and in those first years she played an important role in helping to grow our helmet liner business.
Amy has more than 25 years of experience managing quality, engineering and manufacturing teams in a variety of industries and has obtained multiple professional certifications including CQE, CQA and CQM. She has also completed specialized training in problem solving and product development.
When not at the office, you can find Amy spending time with her family and spoiling her grandchildren. She also loves to garden and is passionate about working in the outdoors. When she has downtime, you can usually find Amy watching historical documentaries or true crime stories.
As the director of product development and research collaboration since 2011, Ron manages Team Wendy’s product development initiatives. He also builds partnerships with academic and government research groups, aiming to produce new insights into how traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur and develop new helmet technologies to help prevent them. Ron joined Team Wendy in 2006 following an engineering co-op with the company, a program he is still involved in with new students participating each year.
Ron is the principal investigator for Team Wendy’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) funded research and development (R&D) initiatives. This includes the Natick BAA award for Polymer Structure Design Options for Improved Headborne Impact Protection, which developed a novel mechanical structure approach to mitigating blunt impact, and a United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) effort to reduce trauma from ballistic impacts. Ron also led Team Wendy’s live blast testing initiative to study the interactions of blast waves with helmets and the brain. He recently established a partnership between Team Wendy and several research groups led by the University of Wisconsin-Madison under a program titled PANTHER. This program is funded by the Office of Naval Research and aims to quantify cellular injury thresholds for TBI and optimize helmet testing and design methodologies around them. Ron holds five patents related to helmets and impact mitigation and is an active member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F08.53 Committee on headgear and helmets.
Ron holds a B.A. in Chemical Engineering (B.Ch.E.) from Cleveland State University with a minor in Chemistry and is currently pursuing his Master of Engineering and Management at Case Western Reserve University. He’s a devoted mountain biker and music lover and enjoys playing the guitar and drums in his spare time, which is limited these days after the birth of his twin daughters in early 2020. He and his wife are dog people and currently have a Boston terrier named Sully. Ron also admits to being a long-suffering Cleveland Browns fan but has high hopes for the team’s future.
As director of sales and business development, Mike oversees the business advancement and sales activity within all industries served by Team Wendy. Since joining the company in 2014, he has played a large part in the company’s growth. When Mike first started with the company, he was the only outside salesperson, but in the course of his tenure he has grown the sales team to include dedicated military, law enforcement, and search and rescue personnel, in addition to establishing an international sales network.
Mike received his commission in the United States Marine Corps in 2000 and served with the 1st Marine Division in Iraq. He holds an MBA from Baldwin Wallace University and a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame, and attributes his understanding of the value of team building and organizational culture to his education and leadership experience in the military.
Mike is the proud father of three children and has lived in the Cleveland area since 2004. He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys traveling and spending time outside with his family.
Halle Nagel joined Team Wendy as director of marketing communications in 2017. In this role she is responsible for the direction of the brand, leading marketing communications projects with a focus on building a differentiated brand through customer-centric initiatives that create a meaningful connection with people.
Prior to joining Team Wendy, Halle spent the previous nine years helping to launch the Dallas, Texas office of Jackson Spalding, the largest independent marketing communications agency in the Southeast. There, she helped with a wide range of projects, such as the launch of Chick-fil-A’s spicy chicken sandwich to the development of Klyde Warren Park, a 5.2-acre park built with public-private funds over a 10-lane freeway in the heart of downtown Dallas. Most recently, she led the content marketing and social media strategy for Houston-based Mattress Firm, the largest multi-brand mattress retailer in the U.S.
Halle holds a B.A. in Political Science with minors in Studio Art and Photography from Southern Methodist University. She is thrilled to be back in her hometown of Shaker Heights where she enjoys spending time outside with her husband and their two Labrador retrievers – Cache and Dallas.
Steve Davis joined Team Wendy as director of finance in 2019. In short, Steve directs and oversees all of Team Wendy’s finance and accounting functions. He is responsible for day-to-day planning, implementing, managing and controlling financial-related activities in addition to accounting, finance and forecasting duties. Other responsibilities under his purview include accounts payable and receivable, cash flow and credit administration.
Steve, a certified CPA, returns to Cleveland after nine years in Atlanta, Ga. He brings with him 20 years of finance experience, including 14 years in multiple manufacturing environments. Most recently Steve served as the director of accounting for Atlanta-based Reliance Worldwide Corp., a $1 Billion ASX listed company that is a global leader and manufacturer of water delivery, control and optimization systems. Along the way Steve provided financial direction for biopharmaceutical company UCB Inc., Sabre Industries and Novelis Inc. – a $10 billion global supplier of aluminum rolled products.
Steve earned his BSBA in Accounting from John Carroll University. He and his wife Alycia have three children and are huge fans of Cleveland sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes, even naming their pup Scarlet. In his spare time Steve enjoys coaching, volunteering, golf, skiing, and attending sporting events and concerts. His ideal meal is seafood with ice cream for dessert.
Shelly Simpson is the director of human resources for Team Wendy. In this role, Shelly oversees employee relations, talent acquisition and development, payroll administration, employee benefits, worker’s compensation and employment law compliance. As Team Wendy has experienced significant growth in the last several years, she helps to ensure that we have the right team in place to keep pace.
Shelly began working with Team Wendy in 2007 as the director of human resources for the entire Dan T. Moore portfolio of 18 companies; she followed Team Wendy when the business was acquired by Avon Protection in 2020. Before that, Shelly held titles of HR manager and HR director at other Cleveland-area companies, such as the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Parker Hannifin. She graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Healthcare Administration and a minor in Business Administration from Ohio University. Shelly later went on to earn an MBA from Tiffin University, where she completed the program with honors.
Shelly loves sports – both watching and playing – namely basketball, football and hockey. When not watching a game, you can likely find her eating Mexican food, or better yet, on a beach in Aruba, which is her favorite place to travel with her husband and their two children.
