Preventing Concussions and TBI

Concussions, or mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), can lead to life-altering forms of impairment. At stake is an individual’s ability to function physically, cognitively and psychologically. The data is astonishing. In 2003, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated more than 1.5 million people sustain TBI annually in the United States. The latest data now has that number at more than 2.87 million.

Team Wendy relentlessly pursues improvements to head protection for the benefit of men and women who risk their lives every day. Our engineers and researchers honor the memory of Wendy Moore by digging into causes and effects of traumatic brain injury with the sole purpose of discovering new prevention methods that can be adopted by the communities we serve. In addition to executing our mission and upholding our quality policy, there are several Team Wendy initiatives working toward this goal.

Team Wendy’s cutting-edge R&D efforts include the design and adaptation of innovative ballistic helmet liner materials with the understanding of how they can be optimized to limit trauma. Through multiple research partnerships with universities and government entities, Team Wendy goes beyond the equipment to focus on the brain itself. In 2017 we joined the prestigious PANTHER program – a partnership between several research groups led by researchers at the University of Wisconsin – with the goal of quantifying cellular injury thresholds for TBI. Furthermore, we aim to optimize helmet testing and design methodologies around those thresholds. Our research with the esteemed PANTHER program was featured in 2019 at the Military Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) in Orlando, FL.

Team Wendy’s deep understanding of real-world impacts and energy rates shape our products and how we test them. Internal and independent testing allows us to explore shell and liner designs and how a myriad of impact forces truly affect the equipment we make. We take a hard look at the geometry of our helmets in pursuit of state-of-the-art protection and comfort through our existing patented technologies.
