The U.S. Navy Turns 245 Today

Back to Blog

Team Wendy’s history with the U.S. Navy dates back to 2005

Today we honor the legacy of the United States Navy, which is celebrating 245 years of excellence.
The U.S. Navy, made up of approximately 325,000 active duty personnel, 210,000 civilian employees and 98,000 reserve personnel, can trace its origins back to the American Revolution. The Continental navy – its original incarnation – was created by the Continental Congress in 1775. It was tasked with disrupting transports to British troops during the Revolutionary War. Whether brigs, sloops or frigates, its small ships often sailed in pairs to seek out the powerful British Navy and prevent British troops from receiving increasingly necessary aid.

By the 1790s, the federal government made a permanent commitment to maintaining a fleet of naval forces. Founding Father John Adams intensely advocated for the upkeep of a standing navy, and before long storied battleships like the USS Constitution and the Great White Fleet became part of the American mystique.

Along the way submarines were added to the fleet in 1898 and air craft carriers in 1927. The Navy took to the skies in 1911 after purchasing a Curtiss A-1 Triad, and its own aeronautical specialists would fly alongside the prowess of the U.S. Air Force.

The Navy now has more than 490 ships between its active service and reserve fleet. Close to 100 more ships are being planned or built.

Team Wendy’s partnership with the Navy dates back to 2005 when the company’s ZAP™ (Zorbium® Action Pads) 7-Pad NSN Liner System became the approved liner system for most standard issue ground combat helmets worn not only by the U.S. Navy, but also the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army.

We salute the men and women of the U.S. Navy and thank them for their earnest devotion to our country.
