When Protection Matters Most: How a Team Wendy Helmet Helps Save Lives

A Moment That Changed Everything  

The call came in unexpectedly.   

“I wasn’t even supposed to be on that response,” the Law Enforcement officer recalled. “I saw the SWAT callout come through and called my sergeant. He said they did not need anyone else—but since I was already awake, he told me to come out anyway.”  

Arriving on scene without full context, the situation quickly escalated. All we knew was that a homicide had just occurred that morning, and the suspect had fled to his house. After assessing the environment and talking to family members to get a layout of the house and not knowing whether other family members were in the house, the team decided to enter the residence and begin clearing the structure.  

They reached a locked back bedroom door.  

“We knew we had to breach it. I grabbed my tool, and training just took over. At no point was I worried about what would happen next; it was just training kicking in. The door swung outward. As it opened, instinct kicked in—he dropped the RAM tool, unholstered, and moved into position to enter the room.” 

“In that moment, I realized I was exposed. Time slowed down. I saw the suspect’s barrel coming toward me. My only reaction was to fire and get out of the doorway.  It all happened in seconds. I felt a burning sensation on my arm, then pressure on my head. I was knocked down but never lost consciousness.  And at that moment, the helmet did exactly what it was designed to do: it saved my life by stopping the round.”
