My name is Sam Boyer-Groff and my career in emergency medicine began when I was still in high school. Growing up near Madison, Wisconsin, I became certified in Outdoor Emergency Care and volunteered as a ski patroller. Through ski patrol, I joined a live-in program with the Monona Fire Department, where I earned my Firefighter I and II certifications, EMT certification, and eventually became a paramedic. Those early experiences taught me the importance of teamwork, service, and staying prepared for the unexpected.
After moving to Iowa, I spent seven years working as a mobile intensive care paramedic. During that time, I also became a reserve deputy sheriff and joined an Emergency Response Team (ERT/SWAT) as an entry team member. One of the opportunities I’m most proud of from that period was helping establish a tactical medical program, combining my passion for emergency medicine with law enforcement operations.
Several years later, my wife and I moved to Colorado, where I joined a large hospital-based EMS agency and became part of its Tactical Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) team. Today, I provide medical support to two SWAT teams, as well as search-and-rescue and wildland fire operations. I also work as a critical care flight paramedic aboard a helicopter on Colorado's Front Range, responding to emergencies in the field and transporting critically ill and injured patients between hospitals.
Throughout my career, I've always believed in continuing education. I earned a bachelor's degree in Emergency Management and Homeland Security and am currently pursuing a master's degree in Critical Care Paramedicine through Monash University in Australia. Learning has been essential as I've moved into increasingly specialized areas of prehospital and critical care medicine.
Outside of work, I enjoy pushing myself in endurance sports, especially ultramarathon running. I've completed multiple marathons and 50K races, a 50-mile ultramarathon, and the Run Rabbit Run 100-mile race in Colorado's mountains. Running gives me the opportunity to spend time outdoors while continually testing my physical and mental limits.
Sharing Knowledge Through PrepMedic
In 2018, I started PrepMedic, an educational media brand focused on emergency medicine, tactical medicine, public safety, and professional equipment.
What started as a YouTube channel has grown into a community of more than 650,000 subscribers on YouTube and over 70,000 followers on Instagram. My goal has always been simple: provide practical, informative content grounded in real-world experience while giving viewers an authentic look at the people, equipment, and challenges within emergency services.
Through medical education, gear reviews, and behind-the-scenes content from EMS, flight medicine, tactical medicine, and public safety, I try to make these professions more accessible and understandable to both professionals and the general public.
Why Prevention Matters
As someone who has spent a career treating injuries and responding to emergencies, I've come to believe that true medical preparedness begins long before an injury occurs.
Helmets, seatbelts, airbags, and safety standards are the foundation of good medicine because preventing an injury will always be better than treating one.
As a ski patroller, I saw life-altering head injuries that could have been prevented or significantly reduced through helmet use. Those experiences left a lasting impression on me. Today, I spend countless hours wearing helmets, both professionally and recreationally, and I've personally avoided multiple concussions because of them.
I can teach someone how to recognize and manage a head injury, but preventing that injury in the first place is far more powerful.
Why Team Wendy
That philosophy is one of the reasons Team Wendy resonates so strongly with me.
The helmets I wear need to work with me, not against me. Whether I'm supporting tactical operations, flying medical missions, or spending time outdoors, I need equipment that I can trust. Team Wendy's focus on protection, comfort, and functionality allows me to wear their products for extended periods without distraction and with confidence that they'll perform when it matters most.
What impressed me most, however, was the people behind the products.
When I met Team Wendy's designers, engineers, scientists, and project leaders, it became immediately clear that their priority is building the best, most protective helmet possible, not simply creating another product. Their ongoing research into protection against evolving battlefield and operational threats demonstrates a genuine commitment to advancing head protection.
What resonates with me is the sense that Team Wendy doesn't bring a product to market simply because they can. They do it because they believe it can better protect the person wearing it.
As someone who has built a career around helping people on some of the worst days of their lives, that mission aligns closely with my own. Team Wendy understands that preparedness isn't just about responding when something goes wrong. It's about taking the right steps to prevent injuries before they happen.
That's a mission I can proudly stand behind.
